Abstract:Have our telecoms policymakers really sanctioned the growth of powerful and unaccountable private monopolies? Has the need for national operators to compete globally taken precedence over public interest? And now that many of those operators have their backs to the wall, is a round of mergers and takeovers set to compound the problem? There are those who believe public ownership of the network must be restored—if we aren't all to catch a cold every time the telecoms sector sneezes.
