Abstract:

Previous research has indicated that the work environment in schools isnot conducive to management learning development particularly in thecase of middle managers such as heads of departments. Reports furtherdetailed research involving middle managers in 49 secondary schools inthe Midlands and North West of the UK. The research instrument used isthe learning organization questionnaire, and the analysis highlightsparticular weaknesses in the organizational structure and climate inschools in relation to management learning. Indicators are given forplanned and managed development activities in schools which could helpto overcome the reported problems of middle managers.
