Abstract:
This essay examines the relationship between the Aesthetic interior and homosexuality in late-Victorian Britain. In an examination of the metaphorical interiors of Walter Pater and of the literal interiors of Wilde's and Ashbee's homes in Chelsea, I suggest that homosexual men used interiority to create spaces where private desire and public self were integrated. This argument rejects the familiar reading of such spaces as narcissistic. Instead, I speculate on the ways in which the interior could provoke reflection and could enable a re-imagining of one's orientation in the world.Document Type: Research article
