Abstract:
This article is meant as a tribute to Edward Schillebeeckx, the great Dominican theologian of Belgian origin who passed away on 23 December 2009 at the age of 95. The article shows how his monumental oeuvre is marked by a certain inclusion, in the sense that both his first and last works were devoted to the theology of the sacraments. However, there is a substantial difference between the Schillebeeckx of the 1950s and the Schillebeeckx of the late 1990s. The article explains in which aspects the early monographs differ from an article which appeared in Dutch in 2000 in which he announced a future monograph on the sacraments. Even if this book was never actually finished, it is possible to reveal a conspicuous shift between the early and late Schillebeeckx — a shift which cannot be reduced by an appeal to a discourse on the changed cultural contexts. Clearly, Schillebeeckx ended his impressive intellectual career with significant modifications to his early views. The article suggests that this may primarily be due to a changed attitude towards the liturgy. Keywords: VATICAN II; SACRAMENTS; THEOLOGY; LITURGY; ANTHROPOLOGY; SCHILLEBEECKX
