abstract = "The short season of Septuagesima was suppressed in the post-Vatican II reform of the Church's calendar. This essay, which examines the reasons for the suppression and its effects, has three parts. The first briefly considers the origin, nature, and purpose of Septuagesima, for a proper appreciation of the suppression of a season in the Church's Sacred Year necessarily depends, in part at least, upon understanding why it was instituted in the first place. The second traces the decision to suppress Septuagesima through the records of the group entrusted with the revision of the Church's calendar, Coetus 1 of Consilium ad Exsequendam Constitutionem de Sacra Liturgia — usually simply called the Consilium. The third examines the collects of Septuagesima — that is, the prayers which most particularly express the sentiments proper to the season. A summary and evaluation of findings concludes the essay.",
