Abstract:

In July 2007, the author attended a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social High Level Segment held during the world leaders' summit (G8 summit). The primary aim of attendance was to explain to the Information and Computer Technology (ICT) Segment how ultrasound can help achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals. This article reviews the aims of the Millennium Development Goals, the progress that has already been made towards achieving the health-related ones and explains the potential impact of ultrasound and ICT in remote and resource poor environments. Finally the article highlights the personal and professional contributions that UK healthcare workers can make to the United Nations Development Programme.
