Abstract:

Research into the manufacture and provision of rural clothing during the period 1800-50 has so far been limited. This article will shed light on the subject by examining in detail evidence from the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. A range of sources, including local newspapers, trade directories and business records, has been examined. Historians have recently recognized the need for micro-analysis of particular areas and comparison within and outside the boundaries of these districts. By investigating specific localities and the businesses found there, this research will question established narratives in relation to the development of the garment industry, particularly the availability of ready-made clothing in rural areas.
