Abstract:
In 1883 Thomas Knowles patented a balance designed to estimate the 'counts' of a sample of yarn without the need for calculations or tables. The balance was based on a clever, but practical, idea, and it was used extensively for well over 50 years. This note explains the essence of the idea, and the background of the people who designed and made the balance.Document Type: Research Article
