Abstract:

Experiments were carried out to study the effect of chromium additions to copper on the wettability of the latter on alumina substrates. The results showed that chromium can enhance the wettability of copper on alumina ceramic. To investigate the phase evolution at the interface after introducing chromium additions, X-ray diffraction was used to study the interface between the metal and alumina. It was found that two different types of copper aluminium oxide, namely, CuAlO2 and CuAl2O4, were formed near the interface between pure copper and alumina ceramic. For the copper with chromium additions, only chromium oxide was found at the interface. The reaction products were analysed and possible reaction mechanisms were proposed.
