Abstract:

Modern design philosophy of high temperature systems is based on the use of a substrate to provide the mechanical strength properties and a thin coating to inhibit oxidation and corrosion. The thin coating can be applied using a wide variety of processes. This paper describes the use of thermal spray processes and, in particular, the process of detonation gun and plasma spraying. The effects of the process environment, combustion system, powder properties, powder injection, and heat treatments are reviewed. Finally, the plasma spraying of thermal barriers is presented and discussed.
