Abstract:
Vincenzo Consolo, commenting on the tradition of Sicilian fictional writing, distinguished between writers he called 'verticali' and those he called 'orizzontali'. While 'horizontal' writers are those whose work can draw on cosmopolitan experience, reaching for inspiration beyond national boundaries, the 'vertical' writers (Neapolitans, Sicilians, South Americans) are drawn by the conditions of the reality they inhabit to explore compulsively the underlying social and historical structures of their own land: 'maggiore è l'infelicità di una terra, più i suoi scrittori sono "verticali" per il bisogno di spiegare il proprio dolore, di capirne il perché.'Document Type: Research Article
