Abstract:

It has been estimated that physiotherapists in an out patient department spend up to 40 percent of their time treating patients with low back pain (LBP). In the last 20 years, research has investigated the value of various physiotherapy techniques on LBP, frequently concluding that such types of interventions are not substantiated. More recently physiotherapy techniques have been explored by research physiotherapists, whose work has led to a clearer understanding of lumbar spine dysfunction; this in tum has led to changes in clinical reasoning and clinical practice.

The aim of this paper is to highlight the evidence available to support the therapeutic efficacy of physiotherapy on low back pain (LBP) and to acknowledge recent and ongoing research by physiotherapists in this area.
