Abstract:

The challenges associated with biblical historiography are such that some despair that a history of Israel can ever be written. In this paper, it is suggested that a viable approach to solving this problem may be to collate all biblical and extra-biblical material related to one specific layer of the multilayered biblical structure. It is here suggested that a reasonable balance of the probabilities of competing models can be achieved by a close comparison of all the arguments for and against each model. This approach is illustrated by an analysis of the biblical description of the trade relationship between Hiram I of Tyre and King Solomon. The conclusion is that although many of the details remain beyond the historical horizon, a trade agreement between these rulers probably did exist.
