Abstract:
David and Jonathan are well-established Old Testament exemplars of male friendship between warriors — although the biblical narrative potentially raises a number of problematic questions, notably about the intensity and mutuality of the relation (arguably over-emotional on the part of Jonathan and cynical on the part of David), and about the ethics of David's subsequent dealings with Jonathan's children. This article examines the differing nuances of the presentation of this relationship in the Vulgate and in three medieval biblical narratives: Peter Comestor's Historia Scholastica, the Weltchronik of Rudolf von Ems and the Rijmbijbel of Jacob van Maerlant.Document Type: Research article
