Abstract:
A list of the knights dwelling in the liberty of Durham has long been familiar to historians of the North-East, but has never been examined in the detail it deserves. This article offers a new edition of the list and a reassessment of its value. The list does not, unfortunately, cast new light on the battle of Lewes of 1264, despite its rather misleading manuscript heading. It is, however, an important record of thirteenth-century knightly society in the liberty, and it provides valuable evidence of Durham's historical and chivalric culture around the beginning of the fourteenth century. Keywords: LIBERTY OF DURHAM; 1264; LEWES; HISTORICAL CULTURE; KNIGHTHOOD
