Abstract:
A novel single shot casting process developed by the Casting Research Group at the University of Birmingham, UK and N-tec Ltd, a local company, has potential to effect significant reductions in the energy consumption of foundries casting aluminium or other light metals. The CRIMSON (constrained rapid induction melting single shot) process requires only a quantity of melt sufficient for each individual casting. This eliminates the energy required to hold large volumes of metal in the molten state and the waste generated by excess molt. Current cast shop operations are estimated to consume more than 180 times the energy actually required to melt the metal in a cast component.Document Type: Research Article
