Abstract:
The development of microstructure and crystallographic texture in an AA 3004 alloy during fiat rolling at elevated temperature has been investigated. A significant feature of the microstructure was the presence of banding associated with inhomogeneous deformation. The planes defining this banding were often inclined at angles greater than 45° to the rolling plane. The texture of the material changed during rolling, from one typical of high stacking fault energy metals to one with an anomalously high (011)[211] orientation density. The low strain texture agrees approximately with that predicted using Taylor's fromogeneous deformation model, and it is proposed that the change in texture observed is associated with the banding seen in the microstructure. Although the texture change observed is similar in some respects to that found in low stacking fault energy fcc metals, the relationship between structure and texture proposed here is different to that which has been proposed for those metals; specifically, it is now suggested that the bands are tilt boundary like structures resulting from unstable deformation occurring after strain aging.MST/1109
