Abstract:A brief introduction to the areas of ceramics research concerned in thedevelopment of ceramics for internal combustion engines is presented which includes outlines of the high-purity powder production and compaction process, the sintering process, and of toughened ceramics. Much of the academic research current in the UK is supported by the Science and Engineering Research Council and both present activity and future development are briefly discussed.
