Abstract:There are two broad categories of data from which to write Chinese population history. One is official enumerations of households, mouths, and corviable individuals as listed by province, prefecture, or county. The other is biographical data emanating from non-official sources. These include lineage registers, and the various necrological genres related to the practice of the ancestral cult.
