Abstract:In the last twenty years there has been a substantial increase in both the quantity and quality of Soviet sinological literature. Because of the language problem, this literature has remained outside the purview of many western sinologists. In recent years, however, American and European scholars have begun to recognize the importance of the Soviet contribution to Chinese studies. Gilbert Rozman, for example, has argued that “along with Chinese, Japanese and English, Russian should now be regarded as one of the essential languages for the study of China.”
