Abstract:

The analysis of historical data on equipment failure is shown to provide a basis for the selection of potential candidates for condition-based maintenance (CBM). Problem areas highlighted by such analyses can also be used to identify inadequacies in existing CBM programmes. The overall methodology is illustrated through a case study of the mobile equipment fleet at an underground gold mine, which focuses on CBM of engines as prescribed by oil analysis. The results from the case study are used to investigate the cost savings potentially achievable through effective application of CBM in mining.
