Abstract:

Interdisciplinary approaches to the study of medieval castles have transformed the subject over the last quarter of a century and taken it away from its militaristic roots. In Medieval Archaeology 51 (2007) Colin Platt published an article that reasserted defence as the primary motivation in castle building. This paper suggests that continuing 'defence vs symbolism' debates are detrimental to the subject, which needs to develop a distinctive research agenda of its own but also foster greater links with complementary fields of scholarship.

Interdisziplinäre Ansätze zur Untersuchung mittelalterlicher Burgen haben das Fachgebiet über das letzte Viertel des letzten Jahrhunderts umgeformt und es von seinen militaristischen Wurzeln entfernt. In Medieval Archaeology 51 (2007) veröffentlichte Colin Platt einen Artikel, der die Verteidigung als Hauptmotivation beim Burgbau erneut bestätigte. Diese Arbeit suggeriert, dass die andauernden Debatten 'Verteidigung kontra Symbolismus' dem Fachgebiet schaden, da dieses selbst einen ausgeprägten Forschungsplan entwickeln und auch bessere Beziehungen mit ergänzenden Fachdisziplinen pflegen sollte.

Depuis un quart de siècle, les approches interdisciplinaires de l'étude des châteaux médiévaux ont transformé ce sujet en l'éloignant des ses racines militaristes. Dans Medieval Archaeology 51 (2007), Colin Platt a publié un article réaffirmant que la préoccupation défensive était le motif principal de la construction des châteaux. Nous suggérons dans notre article que la poursuite des débats opposant l'aspect défensif à l'aspect symbolique nuit à ce domaine d'étude, qui doit définir ses propres priorités de recherche mais aussi encourager plus de liens avec des domaines de recherche complémentaires.

In Medieval Archaeology 51 (2007) Colin Platt ha pubblicato un articolo in cui si ribadiva che la difesa fosse la motivazione primaria nella costruzione dei castelli. La presente relazione suggerisce che i costanti dibattiti in cui la difesa viene contrapposta al simbolismo siano dannosi alla materia, che deve sviluppare un proprio originale ordine del giorno di ricerca, ma anche alimentare maggiori collegamenti con i settori di studi accademici complementari.
