Abstract:The potential and future of the concept of identity lies with cybernetics. Cybernetics also needs the concept of identity. Identity provides the point of articulation for cybernetics and the social sciences. Three interrelated societal-level phenomena have together brought about the 'identity society'. They are (1) the emergence of the State-Society and more recently the 'hollowing out of the state'; (2) the rise of a support infrastructure in the form of the matrix of social organizations; and (3) a historical process of individualization. Increasing societal complexity challenges the limited understanding of the processes of governance that were barely adequate in an age of mass society but that are clearly and manifestly inadequate in an age of identity.
