Abstract:Belize, Central America, has been the location of many innovative research projects in Maya archaeology. Over the past generation several problem-oriented projects have contributed significantly to a new understanding of ancient Maya subsistence and settlement, and increased the known time span of Maya culture. An historical review of research in Belize is followed by a resumé of the current state of knowledge and an indication of future research potential.
