Abstract:An historical survey of the use of gold in coinage is presented. The reasons for the use of gold include the stability of and respect for the currency which follow from the universal acceptance of gold's value. A gold coinage also brought prestige to the state and its ruler. Improvements in the refining and coining of gold are noted and the use of gold for military, commemorative and art medals is reviewed.
