	abstract = "A renewed plea for international cooperation between various associations for the advancement of science was made in two editorials in volume 12 (1987) of <i xmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.com/ns/">Interdisciplinary Science Reviews</i>. These were followed by a preliminary meeting in Hanover in 1989, also organised by the Editor, where it was decided to proceed to set up an international union. A further meeting, organised by the British and the Hong Kong Associations, is now reported here. The federation will formally come into being on 1 November 1991.",
