Abstract:During the last decade a programme of research was carried out on the physical metallurgy of the L12 aluminide Zr3Al. In the paper the background to that programme is described and that part of the work that dealt with the nature of flow and fracture is reviewed. Specifically, yielding, work hardening, and fracture under tensile loading are considered and the mechanisms thought to underlie the phenomena are presented. Areas in need of additional work are outlined together with questions arising from the studies.
