Developments in design and application of extrusion preslies for metal processing

Abstract:The review is concerned with hydraulicpress installations for the hot extrusion of the common non-ferrous metals and alloys, and of steels. It is limited to installations for volume production, and the many special applications, especially in the nuclear-plant field, are excluded. Cold extrusion is also excluded, but hydrostatic extrusion is dealt with in some detail, even though early developmental stages were of necessity undertaken with cold hydrostatic fluids. Over the period of the review indirect and lubricated processes have shown significant development, and a comparative evaluation has been made of alternatives, taking copper-tube production as an example.
