Abstract:

In this technical note, evidence is presented that the solidification of ductile iron involves the formation of austenite dendrites in the melt and graphite growth along the primary axis of this dendritic austenite, forming the so called austenite shell. This behaviour is compatible with the widespread melt theory, suggesting that graphite forms in the melt simultaneously with austenite dendrites.
