Abstract:

Pyrolysis of bagasse plays an important role in influencing the combustion efficiency of the biomass fuel. Bagasse, a renewable biomass fuel, possesses high moisture content and a very wide range of particle sizes. The present paper brings out the experimental results of the effects of heating rate, particle size and initial temperature on bagasse pyrolysis. Bagasse is pyrolysed in a thermogravimetric analyser under a nitrogen environment. The thermogram results clearly show that higher particles need more energy for endothermic reaction. If the initial temperature is increased, the time taken for endothermic reaction is reduced. The effects of heating rate and fuel moisture respectively on an elemental composition of CHN and calorific value of bagasse are also studied. There is no significant difference in the mass loss due to different heating rates.
