Abstract:

Energy plants are designed to meet certain demands, for electricity, propulsion, heating, steam, refrigeration and other services, in power stations, ships, factories and buildings. Given demands can usually be met by different concepts of plant. Two examples, a city building and an industrial power plant, show how the most appropriate concept can be identified by a method of computer synthesis that produces and evaluates all the different possible designs. The key to the method, briefly outlined, is an organisation of information in universal form.
