Abstract:In excess of 210,000 map sheets constitute the basic scale coverage of topographic data in Great Britain. Photography based microfilm techniques have alleviated, to some extent, the problems associated with distribution and storage for such vast data quantities. With an increasing number of large scale plans being held in digital form, the use of computer output on microfilm could offer a more cost effective approach. This paper reports on research into the display of topographic information by COM and discusses the quality and usefulness of the results. It concludes that the initiation of a trial service should be integrated into the next phase of Ordnance Survey planning.
