Abstract:
From Spring 2007 to late 2008, the architectural conservation company Paine and Stewart Ltd was given the prestigious task of restoring the interior decorative schemes at Cardiff Castle that were designed by the architect and designer William Burges. During the project, the work constituted the largest historic interior preservation programme in the UK. The systematic approach encompassed almost every room designed or embellished by Burges, and provided the opportunity to conduct a complete overview of the original vision. The ongoing project has revealed numerous unrecorded details and allowed for a unique comparison of the subtly different artistic styles and influences behind the designs. The study of arms and armour was known to be a passion of William Burges. At Cardiff Castle, we can see the architect daring to combine this passion and understanding with architectural decoration. Relatively little has been written about the architecture, influences and historical research of William Burges whilst the subtleties in which he interpreted his interests have been largely overlooked. In this article, we aim to examine the pretext to his particular interest in arms and armour, and to show how he incorporated it throughout his defining architectural contract: Cardiff Castle.Document Type: Research Article
