Abstract:

Linear s-polarized surface waves can exist at the boundary between an isotropic homogeneous medium and a medium inhomogeneous in one dimension (1D-inhomogeneous medium). This is related to deformation of the spatial envelope of the electric and magnetic components of the surface wave propagating in the 1D-inhomogeneous medium (in particular, in a plane-stratified medium). Such linear s-polarized surface waves can appear only provided that the refractive index of the inhomogeneous medium increases with the distance from the interface.
