Abstract:
Formulas for the rate of heating and the conservative and dissipative forces of interaction between a neutral spherical particle and the surface of a homogeneous semi-infinite polarizable medium are obtained for the first time in a nonrelativistic approximation of the fluctuational electromagnetic field theory for a particle moving in vacuum perpendicularly to the vacuum-medium interface. For equal temperatures of the particle and the medium surface, the coefficient of viscous friction in this system is two times that for the same particle moving parallel to the interface. The same ratio is observed for the dynamic contributions to the conservative force of attraction to the surface and the quadratic (with respect to the particle velocity) corrections to the heating rate. It is shown for the first time that, in contrast to the parallel motion, the heating rate also includes a linear contribution, which is dominating in the case of equal temperatures of the particle and the medium surface.
