Our collective identities are affected by both our experience of living with particular policies, and the way in which successive governments frame public policy debate. In particular, these things will, over time, affect the values that we hold to be important – and therefore the level of concern that we express about social and environmental issues. It seems that neoliberal politicians have used an understanding of such processes in order to reinforce public acceptance of their policies. On the other hand, it has become commonplace for opponents of neoliberalism to advance their policies by drawing on arguments that actually serve to reinforce the very values upon which support for neoliberalism is built. This may be understandable tactically, but it is ultimately self-defeating. Opportunities are discussed for countering this trend, and for developing strategies to strengthen the values underpinning public concern for social justice, equality and environmental protection.
