In this article I attempt to conceptualize my existential and institutional experience as the director of the Kharkov Center for Gender Studies acquired in the course of introducing gender studies into the system of post-Soviet higher education. The main subject of the article concerns the logical ground of gender discourse and the complicated relations between the notions of `gender studies', `women's studies', and, within the latter, `feminism' in the former USSR, all in the framework of concepts from Western feminists theory.
