Abstract:

Many years ago Ivan Nikitich Frantsevich foresaw and founded the most important trends of contemporary materials science as the union of science and technology. The successful development of these trends by Franstevich's scientists is currently abundant evidence of his genial sagacity, deep and undoubted erudition, and encyclopaedic knowledge. The article begins with a short history of the department founded and led by Frantsevich through the inevitable transformation until he died. In fact this department was the cradle of the Frantsevich school that has brought up a group of bright talented scientists who are successfully developing Frantsevich's ideas and creating new scientific paths under contemporary conditions on the basis of their own ideas.
