A description is given of the origins, objectives and state of progress of the database, which the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti has created within the framework of the `Sistema Lagunare Veneziano' Project. The database is divided into three sections (bibliography, data and mathematical models) with some complementary facilities that include a dialogue-box for link-ups with data-suppliers and visitors. The database has a unitary structure: consultation via the `research themes' of the project allows access to all sections. Alongside the central aims of the project, data have been collected from various Bodies which have not participated in the project itself, but which operate in the territory of the Veneto Region in sectors of environmental interest. The database furthermore has dynamic characteristics: it has to be continually updated since it has to store data on the environment, which is by its nature very dynamic and continuously monitored. Access to the database is free via the Internet. The basic aims of the database are to collect quantitative information, guaranteed directly by the researchers who have produced it, and then to make it accessible to anyone who wishes to make use of it. The database is intended as an instrument for disseminating environmental information and as a mean of dealing with the management of the territory and the environmental risks in this area in an open fashion.
