Abstract:

Three elements of the ecology of a mathematics methods field experience were particularly important to promoting a shift in locus of authority that precipitated reflective thinking among the preservice teachers: (a) an inquiry perspective, (b) the cohort group, and (c) school-university collaboration. The article describes these three aspects of the ecology of the field experience and provides the perspectives of the mentor teacher, preservice teacher, and teacher educator. Also included are new challenges and problems that arose with each aspect.
