Abstract:

This paper argues that it is in the interest of the museum profession and the public to halt the further spread of charging for admission to museums. The paper first examines the historical development of admission regimes for museums. Research into the likely impact of charging at the British Museum is then reviewed. The final section compares the level of subsidy at charging and non-charging museums.
