Abstract:

The paper discusses the concept of utility. Classical utilitarianism holds the ``mental-state account'' that individuals try to realize only feelings of satisfaction (mental states). Those that hold the ``informed-desire account'' think that individuals care only about the realization of the etxramental states of affairs they wish. According to this position it is not necessary that the satisfaction of a desire will be experienced. Mental states are not in every case important. Which account expresses what individuals really evaluate as useful? This question is essential to the utilitarian because that what is really desired provides him with the basis of what is morally demanded.
