Abstract:

This paper presents some of the author's reflections about past ethnographic research on Latino and Southeast Asian male homosexuality and HIV/AIDS and then considers some of the factors that may motivate graduate students in anthropology to do additional qualitative ethnographic research on homosexual behaviors at present. Also discussed is the amount of time needed to do meaningful fieldwork and two important constraints on ethnographic research focusing on human sexual behaviors. The author, a pioneer in the ethnographic study of human sexual behaviors in the field, has been conducting a longitudinal study of Mexican male homosexuality in Guadalajara, Mexico, since 1968.
