Abstract:

This paper provides an overview of research conducted on the seismic response of structures as reflected in the Proceedings of the Northridge Earthquake Research Conference, 1997. It is an attempt to synthesize key results, point out areas where previous research conclusions were re-confirmed by the 1994 Northridge earthquake and areas where new information was obtained as a result of this earthquake. For a moderate size earthquake, Northridge produced some of the most significant records of any California earthquake. Following the Northridge earthquake, a wide variety of structures and classes of structure have been studied. Many different approaches, techniques and philosophies have been utilized in these investigations. The Northridge earthquake has taught us many lessons about the seismic response of building systems; many more lessons yet remain to be learned. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
