Assessment of Vocational Curriculum Development
Abstract:This paper identifies and examines the effectiveness and efficiency of the curriculum development process in a department of production engineering, DPE, and in a college of technological studies, CTS. The objective is to examine the influence of the CTS curriculum development process in general, and the DPE in particular, in shaping students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes in relation to the requirements of local industry. The study is based on extensive fieldwork that encompassed a review of related literature, questionnaires and personal interviews. In addition, personal interviews were conducted with selected supervisors in local industry, and with those supervising the DPE graduates, in order to gain an insight into their views on the quality of performance in the workplace. Finally, the paper argues that unless the CTS curriculum development process is consistent with the needs of local industry, the college of technological studies will not be able to supply the local market with the required skills, thus increasing dependence on expatriates for years to come.
