Abstract:

This study of Japanese” Living National Treasures” in the Arts forms part of a larger research project examining the recognition and nurturing of talent in different performance domains cross-culturally. The six prominent artists profiled here illuminate the iemoto apprenticeship system in Japan, by which hereditary families control the preparation and entry of artists into particular fields. We describe the apprenticeship of these artists; characteristics of teachers and their teaching approaches; the changing nature of the iemoto system with regard to access for historically excluded groups; and lessons applicable to public school policy and practice. The concluding section places the study in comparative perspective.
