In this research report, the problems caused by the 1999 Mamara earthquake in Turkey have been investigated. The data were collected from a focus group made up of 155 high-school principals working in the region. The results were: firstly, the earthquake caused such problems as environmental
pollution, migration, increase in the crime rates, unemployment, decrease in income, separated and disintegrated families, child abuse, loss of trust in the social institutions, and serious physical, psychological, and mental problems. Secondly, school administrators were found to expect those
in higher systems to produce solutions to their problems. Thirdly, school administrators have attempted, as result of the earthquake, to re-define their role in an extended and changed form.
