Abstract:
As health care organizations become more dependent on technology, a need is growing for organizations to plan for complete computer/communication failures. Health care organizations must ask themselves whether or not they are prepared to provide safe patient care if their communication and computer systems are not available. Children's Specialized Hospital, a multisite pediatric rehabilitative organization in Mountainside, New Jersey, experienced an unscheduled computer downtime in the Fall of 2006. However, leadership and staff realized that the potential for patient harm does exist during computer/communications downtime, and developed a plan to keep the hospital functioning during such events.Document Type: Research article
