Abstract:

Health care associated-infections (HAIs) are major contributors to sentinel events. Twenty years ago, HAIs were considered inevitable consequences, but many of them are indeed preventable. In the event of an HAI, an organization should evaluate the management of the patient in question by determining whether or not the patient?s death or injury was unanticipated, and by conducting a root cause analysis (RCA). The Joint Commission?s National Patient Safety Goal 07.02.01 requires that health care organizations manage as a sentinel event all identified cases of unanticipated death or major permanent loss of function associated with an HAI.
