Abstract:

The Joint Commission's Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong-Site, Wrong-Procedure, Wrong Person Surgery calls for health care providers to take a "time out" before surgery to verify the patient's identity, the nature and the site of the procedure. This process is often less simple that it sounds. This article provides tips and strategies for meeting the "time out" before surgery requirement.
